The Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Dr. Ashatu Kijaji (MP), on December 17, 2025, paid an official visit to Kitulo National Park to assess ongoing tourism activities and called for strengthened tourism services and promotion to attract more domestic and international visitors. The initiative is aimed at accelerating tourism growth in Tanzania’s Southern Highlands.
During the visit, Dr. Kijaji stressed the importance of improving service delivery and destination marketing at Kitulo as a way of unlocking economic opportunities and creating employment for local communities. She noted that developing tourism in the Southern Highlands will help reduce overreliance on a single tourism zone while increasing national revenue through sustainable use of natural resources.
“We must enhance tourism services and promotion at Kitulo to create economic opportunities and jobs for communities in the Southern Highlands, diversify tourism circuits, and contribute more effectively to national income,” Dr. Kijaji said.
In support of this goal, the Senior Assistant Conservation Commissioner for the Southern Zone, Godwell Meing’ataki, explained that the park is guided by strong principles of sustainable conservation. He highlighted ongoing efforts to protect ecosystems, manage natural resources responsibly, and strengthen cooperation with communities surrounding the park.
He added that TANAPA continues to improve visitor services, including internal park infrastructure, accommodation facilities, and visitor education. These improvements are intended to encourage longer tourist stays and increase revenue generated from tourism activities.
Dr. Kijaji was accompanied on the tour by the Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Hamad Hassan Chande (MP), the Ministry’s Deputy Permanent Secretary, Nkoba Mabula, along with other senior officials from the Ministry and the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA). The Minister also visited several key natural attractions within the park.
Kitulo National Park is one of Tanzania’s unique protected areas, widely known for its rich diversity of wildflowers, wildlife, waterfalls, and spectacular highland scenery. These features place the park in a strong position to promote sustainable tourism and enhance its contribution to national revenue.
